It would take weeks (months?) for me to sort through all this data and clear out the worthless files. I found that Free Commander was much faster than Explorer, but still slow. Just getting Windows Explorer to produce a file list from a folder containing many thousands of restored files can take minutes, and if you delete a single file, you will then wait for minutes for the file list to regenerate. This is simply not feasible when one has to go through terabytes of data. It is impossible to know which restored file versions are corrupt without opening the files individually. Still, I would also like to restore the non-essential stuff, and here the duplicate and near-duplicate files present a real problem. The good news is that I was able to locate the most important lost folders and files and restore uncorrupted versions. This may be as good as data recovery gets for a thoroughly trashed hard disk.
Still, unless I learn that other programs are better at minimizing the amount of duplicate/bad/useless data restored, I can't fault the program for working this way. The program also restores a huge number of individual files that are no longer in their individual folders. Lower-numbered files seem less likely to be corrupted than higher numbered. Version *_002 of a file may not be corrupted, while all the file's other versions are corrupted. Those file versions are similar, but apparently not identical. In some cases the program created 17 versions of the same file. When it cannot be sure that a file has been recovered without corruption, the program makes its best guesses about the correct file contents, and creates near-duplicates of individual files, named *_001, *_002 etc. Apparently that's just the way the program works. I was surprised to find that DRP had located over 5.5TB of potentially recoverable files on one 1.5TB drive, and that drive was not nearly full.
